Our Story
How It All Started
In 1998, a chief perfumer at Shiseido in Japan named Shoji Nakamura identified something nobody had explained before: why people start to smell different as they get older. The Japanese already had a word for it. Kareishu, the smell of aging.
Here is what he found. Somewhere around 40, the skin starts making more of its own natural oil, and the antioxidants that kept that oil fresh for four decades start going off duty. Left unprotected, the oil goes bad the way any oil does, and it turns into something called nonenal: greasy, waxy, and water-repellent. That is why normal soap cannot wash it off, and why the smell keeps coming back by morning no matter how clean you are.
And because your nose gets used to you, you cannot smell it on yourself. The people around you can.
For years, persimmon soaps were the best answer available, and they do their part. They wash off the oil that has already gone bad. But washing was only ever half the job, because tomorrow your skin makes new oil, and nothing in those soaps keeps it fresh.
Sutter was built around the missing half. Taylor Holden: who noticed the gap and why they built it.
Our Mission
To give you something no persimmon soap ever could: the confidence of knowing instead of hoping. Clean off what is there, protect what is coming, and never wonder again.
Why Sutter Works When Others Failed
Three Antioxidants, Not One
- Persimmon cleans off the oil that has already gone bad.
- Green tea extract helps keep the new oil from going bad.
- Vitamin E adds a second layer of antioxidant protection.
Take one of those away and you are back to a soap that quits before morning.
Clean, Then Protect
Most soaps only wash. They handle today and leave tomorrow wide open. Sutter does both jobs in one bar: it cleans off what is already there, then keeps protecting the oil your skin makes next. That is the whole difference, and you feel it in the morning, not just in the shower.
Nothing to Hide Behind
No heavy perfume. No film left on your skin. No tightness after. If a soap needs a strong fragrance, it is fair to ask what it is covering. Sutter smells like a good clean bar, because the point was never to smell like flowers. The point is to smell like nothing but you.
Where It Comes From
Persimmon soap is not a trend we jumped on. In Japan, where this smell was first named and studied, persimmon has been the traditional answer for generations, and the 1998 Shiseido research finally explained why it helps.
What the tradition never solved was the other half of the job. That is the part we built Sutter to do.

Our Commitment
We know what it is like to wonder. To sniff your own shoulder before you leave the house. To hug someone you love and do the math in your head afterward. We hear from customers every week who spent years buying soaps they had no way to grade.
You deserve better than wondering.
So we stay committed to:
- Honest explanations. We will always tell you exactly what the soap does and what it does not do.
- Real ingredients at real jobs. Persimmon to clean, green tea and vitamin E to protect. Nothing decorative.
- A guarantee you can actually use. 30 days. If your mornings do not change, you get your money back.
- Support from people who get it. No judgment, no scripts, no awkward questions.
Thank You for Trusting Sutter
